When my clients come to their Reveal and Ordering appointment, many are surprised that I show both color and black and white photography of their boudoir images. Why create both? Well, to be truthful, I’m in love with black and white images- I always have been! I understand that not all my clients have a love affair with black and white photography as I do. That’s why I do edits for both color and black and white.
No Distraction
What is so special about black and white photos for me? To start, there are no colors to distract the eye. When a client comes in with a hot pink bra, it can be super cute, but when you’re thinking of framing your photography after your session, the hot pink colors may clash with your home decor.
Black and white photography will never clash with your home decor because black and white photography will mesh with everything. Check out this cool black and white collage made from boudoir images.
Mystery and Emotion
Another reason I love black and white photography is the added depth and mystery and overall emotion it can add to a photograph.
This photo below in particular would hold much less weight if it were in color. The dark black shadows mixed with the harsh highlight on her body really emphasize the lines of delicateness of her body- something a color photograph may not depict so well.
Timeless
Finally, the added cherry on the cake that I love about black and white images is their timeless appeal. Check out this black and white Raw Photo shoot I did earlier in 2019. The images will withstand the test of time because of the way they were captured in black and white. If they were in color, it wouldn’t hold the same timeless vibe.
Although my color edits aren’t a heavy wash or something that would be outdated in the future, there’s something historical and timeless about a good black and white image. Don’t you agree?
Why Color Works
Now, to play Devil’s advocate, there are certain images I adore in color. If a client comes in and she’s had a lot of tattoo work and they’re in color, sometimes those are great to have in a color photograph. Also, photos where a woman’s giving amazing eye contact- those are ones to be in color because we want to see the stunning color of her eyes.
So, sure…it makes sometimes to have images in color for me, but this gal is a sucker for black and white.
How about you? What’s your poison, love?
