“What treatments should I do for my skin before a photoshoot?’
As a Licensed Esthetician I get this question often. Whether you’re getting a beautiful boudoir shoot from the fabulous Emily or you’ve got a wedding coming up, here are the top 5 treatments to get beforehand.
TOP FIVE SKIN TREATMENTS FOR A BOUDOIR SHOOT
#5 Microdermabrasion
This treatment uses a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer, and has many benefits. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage and stretch marks. There is no discomfort or downtime.
#4 Chemical Peel
A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove layers of skin, revealing the more youthful skin underneath. Peels can reduce or improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin coloring and other skin imperfections. Discomfort and downtime vary depending on the type of peel. A few favorites of mine are the SkinMedica Illuminize Peel (minimal discomfort, no downtime) and the SkinMedica Vitalize Peel (minimal to moderate discomfort, 3-7 days of downtime).
#3 Diamond Glow
This treatment exfoliates, extracts impurities, and infuses SkinMedica Pro-Infusion Serums all at once. Your esthetician will choose the serum that best applies to you. These serum options are: Pore Clarifying, Skin Brightening, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic and TNS Advanced. There is no discomfort or downtime for this treatment.
#2 Dermaplane
This treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that shaves away the top layers of your skin. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring. There is an added benefit of removal of peach fuzz, which allows for a flawless makeup application. With deeper exfoliation than microdermabrasion this is my ‘must-do’ treatment! There is no discomfort or downtime for this treatment.
#1 COMBO Diamond Glow & Dermaplane
The Holy Grail! Combine a Diamond Glow Facial with a dermaplane for the glow-iest glow.
Maximizing your skincare routine also plays a huge part in creating a glowy canvas. In the days leading up to your shoot there’s one keyword:
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
Ditch the actives like retinol, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid at least 5 days prior to your shoot. Especially in this dry Colorado climate it’s important that you maintain a healthy and hydrated skin barrier that will shine through in your photos. My top 4 favorite products for deep hydration are:
Facial Recovery Oil from Eminence
With 6 different types of deeply hydrating oils, this product is liquid gold for Colorado residents. For best results, use 2-3 drops after applying your moisturizer or night cream.
Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 from SkinCeuticals
This is the best of the best night cream that combines major hydration with all the anti-aging benefits.
HA5 from SkinMedica
A must have for any dry climate dweller. Hyaluronic Acid absorbs 1000x its weight in water to hydrate deeper than just the surface level. For best results, use 1 pump and mix in a few drops of water before applying.
Avocado Lip Oil from Sorella Apothecary
A perfect pout is a must-have for a boudoir shoot, don’t you think? This is the end all be all of lip oils. Apply nightly or for day use if you’re ok with a thicker product on your lips.
BONUS Lime Stimulating Masque from Eminence
While not hydrating this masque will take you from dull to glowy in a matter of minutes. Warning: it’s a little spicy on the skin as it is a stimulating product. It will leave you a little rosy for about 10-30 minutes but after it settles you’ll have an amazing glow. Use this masque the night before your shoot.
SKINCARE TIMELINE
Here’s a timeline of when to get these treatments and how to utilize your hydrating products:
5 Days Before Your Shoot: Go get your Dermaplane and/or Diamond Glow!
4-1 days Before Your Shoot: Avoid active ingredients (lactic acid is ok), focus on hydration and don’t forget your SPF 🙂
Day of Your Shoot: Your makeup artist will likely use a primer on you before applying makeup. But before you get glam, do an ultra hydrating skincare routine that morning. I recommend: Cleanse, Vitamin C and E Serum, Hyaluronic Acid, Moisturizer, SPF.
These are my recommendations to help you achieve an amazing photoshoot glow, but make sure you’re getting a yearly skin check with your Dermatologist. It’s just as important to get established with a quality Derm as is seeing your favorite esthetician for your monthly facial!
